Good Morning, Miss Dove sits squarely in the line of descent from Goodbye Mr Chips to Mr Holland’s Opus. The New York Times described it as ‘unashamedly sentimental without being excessively maudlin’ – maybe ‘maudlin’ had a different meaning in 1955.
Miss Dove (Jennifer Jones), an elderly school- teacher is taken ill at school. We learn that as a young woman she had been about to marry when her father died, having ‘borrowed’ heavily from the bank of which he was president. Miss Dove decided not to marry but to become a teacher to repay the debt.
She never married but touched many lives as a teacher.
Ben Nye was the makeup artist who turned thirty-five year-old Jennifer Jones into the elderly Miss Dove.
