Giant was a sprawling epic covering the life of a Texas family, the Benedicts, across two generations and the conflicts between the ranchers and new (oil) wealth.
The relationship between Bick Benedict and his wife Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor) was meant to be the core of the movie. But James Dean as Jett Rink, the cowboy who struck oil on his small plot, stole the movie – and made two hour plus run-time bearable.
Gordon Bau was the makeup supervisor.
Elizabeth Taylor’s character supposedly aged through some thirty years but the makeup did not reflect that range – they also relegated her to the middle-distance as soon as she donned a gray wig.
