When Princess Anne (Claire Bloom) came to the English throne in 1702, she lifted to royal eminence two of her closest friends – Sarah Churchill (Jean Simmons), the new queen’s childhood friend, and her husband John, one of the nation’s most illustrious soldiers. In time, they would be accused of running the kingdom for their Queen, who suffered from alcoholism and gout.
The Hallmark production required Anne and Sarah to age into their seventies – both actresses were in their mid-thirties.
