Young Michael Waechter is terrorised by his draconian father and his only comfort and protection comes from his mother Lisa (Julia Roberts) and his cousin Jane. Some twenty years later and Michael – now a New York-based author while his father remains a frustrated literature professor – is heading back to his Midwest home for a Lisa’s belated graduation ceremony. But just as he arrives his mother is killed when his parent’s car – being driven too fast by his father – hits a telegraph pole.
Variety called it right on both the movie’s content and its prospects: ‘Despite the mega-wattage of pic’s starry cast, theatrical prospects seem dim for this clumsy melodrama, which looks and sounds no better than an average made-for-cabler.’
Julia Roberts is only seen in ageing makeup during her final car journey.
Carla Palmer was makeup department head; Richard Dean was personal makeup artist for Julia Roberts; Clinton Wayne (Wayne Studios / W.M. Creations inc) was the special makeup effects artist responsible for Julia’s prosthetic’s.
