Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) is orphaned and is entrusted to the guardianship of the middle-aged intellectual and atheist Don Lope. But although well-respected Don Lope has a weakness for women and he seduces Tristana, making her his reluctant lover while explaining to her that she is as free as he. But when she acts on this freedom, Don Lope must deal with the consequences of his world-view.
Tristana falls in love with and marries a handsome young artist. But when she develops a tumour and her leg has to be amputated; she decides to leave the artist and move back into Don Lope’s household. But now their situations are reverersed as Don Lope is older, weaker and lonely, reduced to playing cards with priests for company and Tristana becomes the dominant personality in the household.
