The Abbai are a humanoid race and were members of the League of Non-Aligned Worlds and are a member race of the Interstellar Alliance. They were one of the many races devastated by the Dilgar invasion, particularly the war criminal Jha’dur.
A humanoid amphibian, Abbai can be distinguished from other races by their distinctive fish-like ridged crest on the top of their head (which is larger in females than males). They also possess a raised bone structure above the eyes and very pronounced cheekbones.
Abbai women featured in two episodes (‘The War Prayer’ & ‘Deathwalker’) of the first season of Babylon 5 but were not seen thereafter.
The makeups for Babylon 5 were originally designed by John Vulich and Optic Nerve Studios; Everett Burrell was the makeup effects creator (seasons 1 & 2); Jeff Farley was the special makeup effects supervisor (season 5 & the TV movies); Mike Measimer was shop supervisor and also an on-set makeup artist.
Kalika Qwal’Mizra: As Ambassador for the Abbai Matriarchate, Kalika Qwal’Mizra (Robin Curtis) was the lead spokesperson for the League of Non-Aligned Worlds at the Babylon 5 Advisory Council in the episode ‘Deathwalker’, demanding that Jha’dur be turned over to the League for trial.
Mila Shar: In ‘The War Prayer’ Mila Shar (Diane Adair) a member of an Abbai agricultural delegation to Babylon 5, was abducted by members of the pro-Earth group Homeguard. Commander Sinclair managed to rescue Mila Shar and arrest her abductors.
