In Star Trek (2009) Gaila (Rachel Nichols) was an Orion female and a cadet in Starfleet Academy in the alternate reality created by Nero’s temporal incursion. While studying at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco in the mid-to-late 2250s, she room-shared with Uhura, who felt that Gaila invited young men back too often.
Gaila had a near-sexual encounter with Lieutenant James T Kirk but the moment was interrupted when Uhura returned early. Gaila tried to hide Kirk under her bed but Uhura discovered him and kicked him out.
In a deleted scene Kirk later apologies to another Orion woman thinking he is speaking to Gaila – I guess all green girls look the same.
Rachel Nichols said:
That process, including hair and makeup, took five hours… They air-brushed the colour on me for the scene with Captain Kirk, so it wasn’t so much paint and paintbrushes. My hair was sprayed a sticky red. To get it off, they used shaving cream to break the chemicals down and loosen the color. A week later, there were still places of green that kept showing up – I’d look down and see it turn up on a toenail, or between my toes. I’d find it behind my ears! I think I was green behind my elbows the longest. I don’t even want to admit how long it took for me to notice that!
Mindy Hall was the makeup department head; Debra Coleman was the assistant makeup department head; Barney Burman (Proteus FX) was the prosthetic makeup designer; Joel Harlow (HarlowFX) the prosthetic makeup supervisor who was responsible for the Vulcans, Romulans, and Klingons.
I believe that it was at Barney Burman’s suggestions that Orions became redheads in the reboot.
