male disguises: Sylvia Scarlett

Sylvia Scarlett

When Henry Scarlett’s wife dies, he and his daughter Sylvia (Katharine Hepburn) flee Marseilles to escape from his creditors – with Sylvia, having cut off her long hair, dressed as a young man and calling herself Sylvester.

The usual complications follow as the pair become involved with first Jimmy Monkley, a Cockney con-man, and later Michael Fane, an aristocratic but bohemian artist.

The makeup

Mel Berns was the makeup artist.
