gender-bending: The Catherine Tate Show

The Catherine Tate Show – Derek Faye

Derek Faye (Catherine Tate) was a was one of the recurring characters over a number of seasons.

Derek was a man who had several stereotypical signs of being gay (combining some mannerisms of famous gay British comedians such as Kenneth Williams and Frankie Howerd), but appeared to be in denial about his sexuality. When people assumed he was gay Derek became very offended and defensive. His most famous catchphrase was: ‘How very dare you!’

The makeup

Vanessa White was the makeup designer and Neill Gorton’s Millennium FX  were responsible for the prosthetic makeup. Fangs FX provided the teeth.

The makeup was nominated both for a BAFTA Craft Award (2007) and for an RTS Award (2004).
