Dune (1965) is a science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert which is frequently cited as the world’s best-selling science fiction novel. It won both the Hugo Award and the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel and spawned five sequels.

Within the Empire the Bene Gesserit sisterhood play an important role through both their advanced mental and physical abilities and their influence over the women of the noble houses. They also have a secret, millennia-old breeding program, the goal of which is to produce a male equivalent of a Bene Gesserit whom they call the Kwisatz Haderach.
Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (Siân Phillips) is the leader of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood; Reverend Mother Ramallo (Silvana Mangano) was Reverend Mother to the Fremen of Arrakis; Lady Jessica (Francesca Annis) is a Bene Gesserit trained noblewoman and the mother of Paul Atreides who undergoes the Reverend Mother Ritual to succeed Reverend Mother Ramallo.
