Martha Stewart (born 1941) is an American business magnate, convicted felon, entrepreneur, and homemaking advocate. She began a catering business in the mid-seventies and published her first book Entertaining a few years later; after several more books she launched the magazine Martha Stewart Living in 1990; in 1997 she founded Martha Stewart Omnimedia which went public in 1999 making her a billionaire.
In 2002, her career was shaken by allegations of insider dealing in shares of an pharmaceutical company. While denying the insider dealing charges, she eventually pleaded guilty to lying to federal investitigators in 2004, and accepted a five-month prison sentence followed by five-months supervision, during which she was required to wear an ankle bracelet. She was released in March 2005 and resolved the last of her legal battles in August 2006 with an agreed settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on the insider trading charges; she agreed to pay the maximum penalty without admitting guilt. She also accepted a five-year bar from serving as a director of a public company. Meanwhile her career continues: she is once again involved in Martha Stewart Living and has returned to daytime television with Martha and a version of The Apprentice.
Martha Behind Bars: is supposedly a dramatisation of Martha Stewart’s trial, and her subsequent five-month prison sentence. Martha is played by Cybill Shepherd, reprising the role she played in the rosier Martha, Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart. Martha seems to spend very little time behind bars and one comment on IMDb aptly describes this movie as ‘boring c**p’.
Mario G Cacioppo was credited for makeup.
