Diana Vreeland (1903–1989) was an important arbitor of style and fashion from the 1940s to the 1970s. She joined Harper’s Bazaar in 1936 as a columnist and stayed there for twenty-five years, becoming fashion editor; in 1963 she joined Vogue as editor-in-chief where she discovered Edie Sedgwick; she was fired by Vogue in 1971 but continued to influence fashion as consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
