C19th makeups: Dickens characters

Featuring various actresses as characters from the novels of Charles Dickens.

Little Dorrit: Little Dorrit is a wonderful satirical novel which highlights a real catch-22 of the nineteenth century: the debtors’ prison in which people who owed money were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. William Dorrit is imprisoned in the Marshalsea; he has two very different daughters: his youngest daughter Amy, Little Dorrit, who cares for him in prison; and the self-centred Fanny who works on the stage.

Little Dorrit (2008): Featured Claire Foy as Little Dorrit and Emma Pierson as Fanny. Karen Hartley was the makeup designer.

Bleak House: Bleak House has a vast, complex and engaging array of minor characters and sub-plots but at its core is a long-running case in the Court of Chancery, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, which has far-reaching consequences for all involved. This case revolves around a testator who apparently made several wills, all of them seeking to bequeath monies and land surrounding the Manor of Marr in South Yorkshire; by the end of the novel the costs of litigation have consumed the estate, and as there is nothing left to litigate about. Lady Dedlock is a beneficiary under one of the wills, and she is also, unbeknownst to either of them at first, the mother of the novels heroine.

Bleak House (2005): Featured Gillian Anderson as Lady Dedlock. Daniel Phillip was the makeup & wig designer/hair stylist.
