Temptation of a Monk

At the beginning of the Tang dynasty, in seventh-century China a general Near the beginning of the Tang dynasty, in 7th century China, General Shi Yan-sheng is tricked into leaving the crown prince unguarded. When the crown prince is murdered by one of his brothers who then becomes emperor, Shi retreats to a monastery, perhaps to hide or perhaps to plan a coup. Both Shi’s loyal troops and the new Emperor suspect the latter and follow him, as does Princess Scarlet (Joan Chen) – seeking both his protection and his love.

When his loyal troops and the princess are killed, Shi seeks refuge in a remote, abandoned monastery where an old abbot schools him with practical, earthy teachings.

But even there the emperor’s agents pursue him. First Violet (Joan Chen again) tricks her way into being accepted as a nun at the monastry, submitting to having her head shaved, and tries to seduce him. But her efforts are rudely – indeed violently –  interrupted by the abbot.

Then a general appears with an army and tries to overcome Shi by force.
