This film was an epic achievement: how does anybody spend so much money on a movie about Cleopatra and make it so boring? Does anybody remember anything about this film other than how much it cost and the Burton–Taylor story?
Elizabeth Taylor’s makeup and hair was very of-the-1960s: some of her less formal looks could have come straight out of The Sandpiper or Reflections in a Golden Eye; in one scene she looked like Mary Quant’s interpretation of the Madonna – no, not that one! – without a child; in another she wore something on her head that looked remarkably like a swimming cap she had worn in a beach scene in Suddenly, Last Summer.
Alberto De Rossi was the makeup artist.
