According to The Book of Judges Delilah was the woman tasked by the Philistine rulers with discovering the secret of Samson’s strength.
Three times she asked Samson for the secret of his strength, and three times he gave her a false answer but she persisted and at the fourth attempt Samson admitted that he did not cut his hair in fulfillment of a vow to God. When Samson slept, Delilah had her servant to shave his head and then ‘the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house’.
When imprisoned at the Philistine temple Samson prayed for his strength to return and toppled the pillars of the temple killing himself and many Philistines. After his death, Samson's family recovered his body from the rubble for burial.
Tthe fate of Delilah is unknown.
Samson and Delilah (1996): coming soon …
Samson and Delilah (1984): Quite an amazingly awful version of the story with Belinda Bauer as Delilah. Brian McManus and Maurice Stein were the makeup artists.
Samson and Delilah (1949): Cecil B DeMille’s production featured Hedy Lamarr as Delilah – ‘history’s most beautiful and treacherous woman’. Wally Westmore was makeup supervisor.
