Henri 4 was a TV movie based on the Heinrich Mann novel of the life of Henri IV, and accurately described as a ‘europudding’.
The story follows the rise of the Huguenot Henri de Bourbon, French Prince of the Blood & King of Navarre to his assassination by which time he was the bon roi Henri of France, and the first monarch of the House of Bourbon.
During the Wars of Religion as part of the Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye Catherine de Medici, the French dowager Queen, summons Henri to her court to have him marry her daughter Margot (Armelle Deutsch).
However, following the wedding the Catholics slaughter the Protestant wedding guests in what became known as the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre and Henri must use all his guile to both stay alive and manoeuvre for the throne. There is not a lot of marital harmony either.
Gerd Zeiss was the key makeup artist; Tamar Aviv & Jörn Seifert (Twilight Creations) and Birger Laube were responsible for the many special makeup effects.
