The Private Life of Henry VIII tells the story of King Henry VIII and the last five of his six wives. It begins just before the execution of Anne Boleyn (Merle Oberon) and ends just after his sixth wedding to Catherine Parr. Unusually – but perhaps unsurprisingly given the cast – its focal point is the relationship between Henry and Anne of Cleves (Elsa Lanchester).
As Anne Boleyn was probably aged thirty to thirty-five at her execution Merle Oberon at twenty-two was somewhat young for this role – though given the uncertainty about Anne’s date of birth she it is conceivable that she was as young as twenty-four.
