The Private Life of Henry VIII tells the story of King Henry VIII and the last five of his six wives. It begins just before the execution of Anne Boleyn and ends just after his sixth wedding to Catherine Parr. Unusually – but perhaps unsurprisingly given the cast – its focal point is the relationship between Henry and Anne of Cleves (Elsa Lanchester).
Anne of Cleves was aged twenty-four when she married Henry and was thirty-two when he died, so Elsa Lanchester at thirty-one was not a bad age match for the role.
