Annia Aurelia Galeria Lucilla or Lucilla (c150-182 CE) was the second daughter of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the Empress Faustina the Younger. In 164 she was married to her father’s co-ruler Lucius Verus, who died a few years later, and received the title of Augusta and became a Roman Empress.
After her father’s death in 180 her brother Commodus became Emperor. Lucilla was apparently not happy living as a private citizen in Rome after having been an Empress and plotted to assassinate Commodus and replace him with her husband and herself as the new rulers of Rome.
The assassin was overpowered by Commodus’ guards and Lucilla and two of her female accomplices were exiled to Capri where they were executed in 182.
Gladiator (2000): A powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius is chosen by the Emperor as heir in place of his own family dead and the former general condomened to the arena. Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) plots with him to overthrow Commodus. Paul Engelen was the key makeup artist.
The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964): Marcus Aurelius tries to leave a legacy of peace among his great empire by naming his friend Livius as his heir. Livius in place of his cruel and slightly insane son, Commodus. When Commodus seizes powerhe sells his sister Lucilla (Sophia Loren) to an Eastern prince to secure an alliance for Rome. Mario Van Riel was the makeup artist.
