period: Claudia Procula

Claudia Procula

Claudia Procula is the name usually given to the wife of Pontius Pilate. There is no contemporary evidence that this was her name and only a single reference in the New Testament to Pilate having a wife:

While Pilate was sitting in the judgment hall, his wife sent him a message: ‘Have nothing to do with that innocent man, because in a dream last night, I suffered much on account of him.’

It was enough to garner Claudia a succession of cameos in movies and mini-series.

Later Christian writers elaborated her story, suggesting that she later became a Christian. She is recognised as a saint by both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Some references to Claudia Procula refer her as the daughter of Emperor Tiberius and the granddaughter of the Emperor Augustus. There is no evidence for this.

The earliest reference to the name Procula is from the fourth century, and the first reference to Claudia was much later again.
