Billed as ‘the first Spectacular Opera Film in colour! … its glorious arias sung by the great operatic voices of our age – its powerful drama portrayed by a brilliant cast’. The colour on my copy was definitely not glorious.
Aida, an Ethiopian princess, is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander, Radames, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radames is loved by the Pharaoh's daughter Amneris (Lois Maxwell), although he does not return her feelings.
Aida was sung by Renata Tebaldi and mimed by Sophia Loren – in blackface.
Goffredo Rocchetti was makeup supervisor on the movie.
