racechange: The Far Pavilions

Sometimes I tend to forget that yellowface and brownface linger on: it’s not gone with Fu Manchu or the Cowboys and Indians. Here to prove it is Amy Irving in a 1984 mini-series looking very unIndian-like as princess Anjuli, especially when she shared the screen with Sneh Gupta, who played her sister. To be fair though one visitor has pointed out that her character is part-Russian and pale eyes are not uncommon in the Punjab/Kashmir region.

I’m grateful to Gail Samuelson (production coordinator on the mini-series) for informing me that Pat Hay was responsible for Amy Irving’s makeup.
