In post-War London retired British Major General Ralph Denistoun receives a small package containing a pair of golden earrings.
He sets out for Paris on a plane where he finds himself sitting next to an acquaintance. He tells his friend how while on a mission in Germany at the beginning of the war a Roma woman, Lydia (Marlene Dietrich) who helped him complete his mission and escape back to England by disguising him as a gypsy, complete with golden earrings. The same earrings he has now received.
Arriving in Paris Denistoun sets off to the river crossing where he left Lydia several years ago. He puts the earrings back on and meets Lydia on the other side of the river.
