dental prosthetics: The Borrowers

The Borrowers

Homily Clock (Celia Imrie) and her daughter Arrietty (Flora Newbigin) are two of the Borrowers who live under the floorboards in this movie adapted from the well-known children’s novel.

Flora Newbigin, who gave up acting when she went to university, was interviewed about the movie a few years ago and spoke about the costumes & makeup:

However, in reality they [the costumes] were a bit of a nightmare to wear. With all those layers it would get incredibly hot under all the lights especially with all our bits of jangly things on our belts. Getting it on and off took ages! And it used to take two hours every day to get my hair into those big mushrooms! And I can’t even imagine how much hairspray! We all look a bit funny because all the Borrowers had false teeth. The people who designed the film wanted us to look a bit weird; not quite like normal people. But they took a while to get used to. … But there was so much imagination that went into designing the costumes, it was a lot of fun.

The makeup

Joan Hills was the hair & makeup designer; Susan Parkinson & Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou were makeup artists & hair stylists; Christine Greenwood & Liz Mitchie were additional makeup artists & hair stylists; Terry Jarvis was the wig maker.

Fangs FX provided custom dentures for all the main Borrower characters and generic teeth for other Borrowers. I am grateful to Chris Lyons of FangsFX for the use of the behind the scenes images of Celia Imrie and Flora Newbigin.
