Babylon 5: Ko D’Ath

Ko D’Ath (Mary Woronov) was intended to be a series regular as G’Kar’s aggressive ambassadorial aide but the actress left the show after just a single appearance in ‘Born to the Purple’.

A hasty airlock accident was arranged and a new character, Na’Toth, was created to replace her. J Michael Straczynski stated:

We’d had to replace Mary Woronov with virtually no notice after we found that she really had a hard time with the Narn prosthetics (wouldn’t wear the contacts, and other stuff).

The problems with actresses and Narn makeup did not end there: Susan Kellerman, the first actress to be cast as Na’Toth, quit during her makeup tests and her relacement Julie Caitlin Brown turned down the offer to continue in the role for the second season.

The makeup

The Narn makeups were originally designed by John Vulich and Optic Nerve Studios who explicitly set out to lift the bar for Sci-Fi TV shows: ‘not just a forehead’. They largely succeeded – setting a standard – only beaten by Farscape in the 1990s.
