In one segment of her 1977 TV special An Evening With Diana Ross Diana played Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker and Ethel Waters: she had, of course, already portrayed Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues. The amazing makeup was by Stan Winston who having just completed Roots had acquired a certain expertise in ageing black Americans: unfortunately, I do not have images of Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters at the appropriate ages to show off the likeness achieved at its best.
