C17th England: Nell Gwynne

The movie

Nell Gwynne (Dororothy Gish), a young, poor street vendor, meets the King of England and wins his heart. He fulfills her dreams to become an actress, and the movie relates how she survives being an impoverished girl thrown into Court society, where she uses her new poewer to do ‘good’.

Hammed up – even for a silent movie – it’s not a Rom-Com as we would understand it and it falls uncomfortably between being a comedy and being a love story.

The makeup

As with many movies of the time (1926) no makeup artist was credited, and IMDb has no information either.
