In The Three Musketeers, the young D’Artagnan arrives in Paris of the 1620s dreaming of becoming a king’s musketeer. He meets, quarrels with and befriends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, the three musketeers. Suddenly the country lad finds himself opposing Cardinal Richelieu’s conspiracy to increase his power over Louis XIII by destroying the honour of Queen Anne (Geraldine Chaplin). D’Artagnan must also juggle the attentions of Constance, the Queen’s maid, and Milady De Winter, who turns out to be a ruthless secret agent for the Cardinal.
In The Four Musketeers, D’Artagnan has achieved his ambition to become a musketeer but his life has become no simpler: fighting the Huguenots of La Rochelle, Richelieu’s schemes and the vicious Milady.
