In 1745 Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg (Elisabeth Bergner), a young German princess, arrives at the Russian court to marry Grand Duke Peter, heir to the Russian throne. On here arrival she converts from Lutheranism to the Orthodox Church and
Initially all is well but his suspicious, unstable nature gradually estranges them; Peter finds solace with pretty courtiers while Catherine invents her own (fictitious) lovers, temporarily improving matters.
In 1762 Peter’s accession to the throne brings out the worst in him and Catherine is urged to assume power.
The rest, as they say, is history.
