Alternatively titled The Founding of a Party this was one of twenty-eight films promoted by the Chineses State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television to mark the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party.
The movie depicts the formation of the Chinese Communist Party, from the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911 to the Party’s creation in 1921 and was described by at least one Western critic as a ‘propaganda epic’.
Although less panoramic than the previous The Founding of a Republic, this movie is also stuffed with an all star cast – often in cameo roles. It seems that every Chinese actor and actress wanted – or thought it politic – to feature in at-least one of these movies.
Empress Dowager Longyu (Bingbing Fan) appeared in a scene depicting the abdication of the child Emperor Puyi in 1911. At the time Longyu was forty three and did not look nearly as glamorous as the thirty-year-old actress portraying her.
Mei Hua Huang was the makeup consultant; Ling Wu was the key makeup artist.
