With the help of an American adventurer, Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), an English librarian, starts an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Hamunaptra unaware that another group is interested in the same site. But things get really complicated when a curse is unleashed awakening a Mummy.
Anck Su Namun (Patricia Velazquez) is the exotically decorated mistress of the Pharaoh Seti and no one but the Pharaoh is allowed to touch her. But behind his back she and the High Priest, Imhotep, are in love – and then the suspicious Pharaoh returns unexpectedly and notices that her makeup is smeared.
Anck Su Namun kills herself and Imhotep is mummified alive for trying to resurrect her. His awakened mummy is determined both to restore his own body and to bring Anck Su Namun back to life.
In The Mummy Returns Patricia Velazquez also appears as Meela Nais, the modern reincarnation of Anck Su Namun, wearing a dress that recalls Anck Su Namun’s bodypainting. While Evelyn realises she is the reincarnation of Nefertiri daughter of Seti.
Aileen Seaton was the key makeup artist; Jayne Buxton (as Jane Buxton) & Jane Walker were the makeup artists; Ben Nye Jr was the personal makeup artist for Brendan Fraser.
Sarah Berry was the body painter for Anck Su Namun; Carol Tucker & Jeremy Woodhead were the assistant body painters.
Nick Dudman live action creature effects supervisor (The Mummy) & credited for creature & makeup effects (The Mummy Returns); Mark Coulier was the key prosthetics (The Mummy Returns); Sarita Allison & Joanne Manning were the mummy makeup artists (The Mummy).
This was an effects-loaded movie (a veritable army of makeup and makeup effects artists worked on it) but I believe that Sarah Berry was the chief bodypainter for Patricia Velaquez and was responsible for Anck Su Namun’s paint-job assisted by Carol Tucker.
