This TV movie is based on the Prix Goncourt winning novel by Francis Walder.
In 1570 in the midst of the French Wars of Religion a broke but dedicated Catholic baron is sent by Catherine de Médicis (Marie-Christine Barrault) and King Charles IX of France to negotiate with Huguenot representatives. His dedication to his mission results in the – shortlived – Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which ended the third of the French Wars of Religion and was sealed by the marriage of Henry of Navarre and Marguerite de Valois.
But his success comes at the cost of his relationship with his family; ‘Reasons of state’ bring personal satisfaction and bitterness, accomplishment and ruin against the background of the bloody events.
Bernard Floch & Mabi Anzalone were the key makeup artists.
