racechanging: the Winnetou movies

the Winnetou movies

Winnetou is the fictional hero of several novels written by the German novelist Karl May in the late nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. Before the term ‘spaghetti western’ was coined some eleven Winnetou movies were filmed in Croatia with Pierre Brice as Winnetou, usually teamed with Lex Barker as Old Shatterhand. A number of actors, including Karin Dor, appeared as more than one character in the movies.

In Winnetou: The Red Gentleman, the second movie of the series, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand try to prevent a ruthless oil baron starting an Indian war. Karin Dor played Ribanna

In Winnetou, the first of the movies, violent conflict breaks out between greedy railroaders and a tribe of Mescalero Apaches. Marie Versini played Winnetou’s sister, Nscho-tschi. Although Nscho-tschi is killed she is credited in another Winnetou movie but I’m not sure if this is a prequel or a case of resurrection. Nscho-tschi also appeared in a 2007 remake played by Vanida Karun.
