racechanging: Madame Butterfly

Madame Butterfly

Lieutenant Pinkerton is on shore-leave in Japan when he sees Cho-Cho San (Sylvia Sidney), Madame Butterfly. His companion tells him Pinkerton that he can ‘marry’ this beautiful Japanese woman, enjoy himself with cultural approval, then sail happily on back to America unshackled, since abandonment equates divorce in Japan, and will leave Cho-Cho free to remarry whomever she chooses. When Pinkerton’s ship sails out of port, Butterfly waits patiently for her husband to come home.

After three years Pinkerton returns to Japan. Cho-Cho San is eager to introduce him to their son , but he has a new, American, bride.
